IGOR – Tyler, The Creator – 9

To follow up such a fantastic album like Flower Boy was always going to be a hard task. A task that Tyler probably couldn’t pull off 5 or more years ago. But with IGOR, this shows that Flower Boy wasn’t a fluke and that Tyler really has evolved as an artist that takes all sorts of twists and turn sonically but still manages to create and execute a well produced and meaningful album. IGOR has a very different sound to FB. Performance wise, Tyler takes a back step with only a handful of actual verses, most of them are distorted in some sort of way too. On first listen, this wasn’t sitting right with me but IGOR is definitely a grower and made me realise after every next lesson, Tyler doesn’t need to cover every single aspect of this album for it to be a great. I do like the themes of love and relationships throughout this album they are presented in a very thoughtful and almost vulnerable way. The production is the best I’ve ever heard on a Tyler project. Many other aspects are almost so minimalist that it almost makes you want more, the complete opposite of Flower Boy imo. The opening two tracks are amazing, even tho I’m still not feeling Playboi Carti’s performance on EARFQUAKE, it’s an amazing track but for me, verses aren’t Carti’s strengths. I like this album a lot, I think it’s definitely a contender for album of the year. Another impressive release from Tyler who once looked like continuous great albums was a just a dream. This album is definitely a grower.
